Snow-filled craters of Rainer, one inside the other, once spewed lava. No major eruption has occurred in more than 500 years, geologists say, but escaping steam still keeps parts of crater rims free of snow. Climbers sometimes warm themselves over fumaroles. Distant Mount St. Helens rears its 9,677-foot head above the Tatoosh Range.
